Where you can find them:
By stony riverbeds, on sandy beaches and mudflats.They’re a widespread species that migrate as far as Stewart Island, New Caledonia and Fiji. You can also spot them by the Tauherenikau Delta (a short walk from Lake Domain), on the lakeshore near Wairio wetland or at Ōnoke Spit.
What they look like:
Small and brown, with a white belly, a black stripe on its neck and an iconic chestnut bib.
